so here's the thing

Sorrow

Once a month or so, I think about someone I once admired for their music or acting, or someone with whom I shared morals and ideals. At a certain point, I had to let them go. This happens more often than what I would like to admit, as I would sometimes love to erase them from my mind completely.

I'm basically talking about people, (mostly celebrities and other famous individuals) who have been "cancelled". I don't really believe in cancel culture, but it¡s clear that it doesn't really work. I'm talking about things I do not condone, even if the general public have no idea about or do not care about.

The moment this happens with someone who you used to admire hurts. It really hurts. I find the word admire too strong and powerful, that's why maybe it isn't the best word to be used here, but I'm basically talking about people who you really like. For what they do, or even think. In my case, this has mostly happened with musicians and artists. Male artists mostly. No surprise here.

It really hurts not to be able to listen to their music anymore. Or if, for some reason you do listen to it, it is difficult not to feel sad or disappointed about it. People who have helped you in certain moments of your life with their music; people who have helped you reconnect with your roots and take a greater interest in social, political and historical issues; people who have made you get through absolutely every single existing feeling. Getting rid of something that became a part of your life, existence and personality is not easy at all.

I guess at the end of the day, they're just people. Rich people, mostly. Like yes, they'll probably disappoint us for one reason or another. I know that a lot of people find this very hard: they cannot let go those people they admire. But if we have our own morals and ideals, and we don't want to go against them and ignore them, I think that the best thing we can do is let those people go. Try to forget them, if it's possible.

So yeah, this is kind of like an encouragement message to all those people who cannot let their favourite artists go even if they want to. I'm not blaming you. I'm sure there's an artist made for you. An artist that, luckily, will not disappoint you. An artist that will make you feel the same emotions that your "before-cancelled-favourite" made you feel. Maybe you will even like them more. There are tons of artists for you to discover outside, who share the same morals, values and ideals as you. Who will make you see the world in a different way. Who will make you cry, smile, laugh, whatever you need at every single moment in your life. Someone who can be there for you in this strange and tough world that we live in. Just go and discover them.
